Chatz|Ordered as a required textook, but I read through much that wasn't required, as did my husband! Only complaint is that there isn't a more recent edition to cover past the 90's. Some stuff is outdated.|0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.| Good read!|By Law<|From Library Journal|Until the late 18th century, childbirth was almost exclusively a female event. Then advances in medical science and technology brought male physicians into a dominant role. Rooks, a nurse midwife, has written a detailed history of midwifery
The author describes the disparate backgrounds, training, and roles of certified nurse-midwives and lay or direct entry midwives, and explains the contributions of both groups. Both kinds of midwives currently face challenges arising from within the profession and from massive, rapid changes in the health care system. Rooks believes that maternity care and childbirth in America can, and should, be better than it is today, and offers steps to take in that direction.
